Part of thread: Philosophy of Right: freedom in the state
Civil society and the system of needs
1 min read
Civil society is the sphere of particularity: need, labour, exchange. It is the "system of needs" and the place where individuals pursue their private interests. For Hegel it is distinct from the family (immediate unity) and the state (universal unity). The state does not abolish civil society but gives it its ground and purpose. The tension between the two is central to modern political philosophy.
