Essence as reflected being

In the doctrine of essence, being has "gone behind" itself—it appears as the other of itself. Identity, difference, contradiction, ground: these are the categories of reflection. Essence is the sphere where we think the mediation of what initially seemed immediate. The concept then sublates essence: it is the unity that has returned to itself.
